Description

Satyanarayana Gavara is a Baroda based artist who originally hails from Vijayanagaram District Andhra Pradesh. He completed his B.F.A from the Andhra University, Vishakhapatnam and M.F.A from M.S.U, Baroda. Satyanarayana works in several mediums like painting, woodcut and etching. His visual language is a manifestation of his life experiences relating to food.

He has participated in several exhibitions in India and earned numerous accolades for his work which includes the 55th Birla Academy Award in the Graphics category and the Print Biennale India Grand Prize Award, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi.

“Food, being the most fundamental of human needs is also the site where all the conflicts of society and culture are played upon. For me, hunger is not mere imagination but an experienced reality. It was natural that I implore the reasons for hunger from a personalized tale to a social framework where hunger is systematically orchestrated. Control of food at any time in history was the center of social and economic conflicts. My works are basically about the struggle for attaining food and keeping life sustained.”-Satyanarayana Gavara
