Description

Pralhad Anant Dhond(1908-2001) was born in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. After completing his initial schooling in native Malvan, Dhond moved to Mumbai for his matriculation and joined Sir J.J. School of Art in 1930, from where he attained a Diploma in 1934. After heading the Teacher`s Training Department for 20 years, in 1958, he became the Dean of Sir J. J. School of Art. He was an accomplished portrait and landscape painter. Dhond was greatly influenced by the beauty of Konkan coast of Maharashtra and a large body of his works comprises seascapes.

This is a rare and early artwork by the artist, executed in impasto technique along with application of free brush strokes. The painting depicts a withered tree amidst a barren landscape. The subject serves as a metaphor for the cyclical nature of existence and it symbolizes resilience, loss and the inevitabilty of change.
