Suman Roy (1968 – 2012) was an artist born in Kolkata, India, and studied art at Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan. In the early stages of his career, Suman Roy explored rural Bengal imagery in his artwork. However, he later shifted towards abstract figuration and found his own artistic voice by focusing on portraiture of Christ in various moods and modes. His compositions often depicted Christ in a lonesome manner, conveying a delicate balance of pain and pleasure through a combination of bold and subtle colors. Suman Roy’s artwork, while simple in style, carried profound emotions and themes. His depictions of the divine may have mirrored his personal search for salvation. Sadly, his artistic journey was cut short by his untimely demise at a young age.
