Description

A D Tavaria was a Bombay based painter trained in the academic style of painting. He was active between early to mid 20th century and his body of work comprised mainly of portraits and plein air landscapes of Bombay. Along with working in the mediums of oil and watercolor, Tavaria also painted portrait bromide photographs for his patrons who were predominantly from the Parsi community. His studio was located at the Bazar Gate lane in the Fort area of Bombay from where he also administered art lessons to his students. Tavaria was a highly skilled painter and he widely exhibited and won at various exhibitions held at Calcutta, Madras, Bhavnagar, Shimla, Pune, Lahore and Nagpur.

Tavaria's technical prowess as a colorist is evident in the atmospheric rendition of this composition depicting a seascape. The painting depicts a small fishing boat by the shore in the foreground while several boats can be seen sailing in the sea towards the horizon whose details are only barely visible. Painted in the expressive style inspired by J.W.M Turner, he uses the formal aspects of light and colour to create the magical effect of the sunset by the sea.
