Description

K.M.Gopal was born in Salem  in 1928. He studied at the Madras School of Arts and Crafts, Chennai and obtained his Diploma in Advance painting in 1951.. He was an expert draughtsman and painter who constantly experimented with various mediums. He found his calling in sculpting metal reliefs and worked in the medium throughout his career.  He is known particularly for his metal relief sculptures depicting various avatars of Ganesha in Tantric undertones.

He was one of the founding members of the Cholamandal Artists' Village, where he stayed and practiced his art from 1978. He participated in various solo and group exhibitions in India and overseas througout his career. He won numerous awards and accolades including the Lalit Kala Akademi award in 1988 and the Tamil Nadu Government's Kalaichemmal (Art Maestro) award in 1991. K.M. Gopal passed away in 2000.
