Description

The Chitrashala Press, was established in 1878 by Vishnushastri Chiplunkar at Pune city, Maharashtra, India. It printed chromolithographs of gods & important personalities, collotype & lithograph postcards, playing cards and books.

This chromolithograph titled 'Ashtabhuja Devi' depicts Goddess Durga slaying the demons. She killed Mahishasura under the name of Mahishasuramardini and under the name of Chamunda, she slayed the two asura’s Chanda and Munda. The name Ashtabhuja is derived from the attribute that the goddess had eight hands or Bhuja. She was the daughter of Yashoda – the foster mother of Lord Krishna. There is a temple dedicated to her at Vindhyachal where devotees flock every year to celebrate her greatness.
