Description

Pralhad Anant Dhond(1908-2001) was born in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. After completing his initial schooling in native Malvan, Dhond moved to Mumbai for his matriculation and joined Sir J.J. School of Art in 1930, from where he attained a Diploma in 1934. After heading the Teacher`s Training Department for 20 years, in 1958, he became the Dean of Sir J. J. School of Art. He was an accomplished portrait and landscape painter. Dhond was greatly influenced by the beauty of Konkan coast of Maharashtra and a large body of his works comprises seascapes.

The above painting is an early work done by the artist. The abstracted landscape depicts an overcast evening at the Khar Danda coast in Bombay. Dhond's mastery over the watercolor medium is evident in the fluidic rendering of the work. The artist evokes the mood associated with the impending arrival of monsoon.
